August 1, 2024 Hike to Tikaboo Peak
20 minutes in and I’m taking my first break. I realize today that the Tikabook Peak weather station is visible from the first portion of this hike (sector 1 from previous post) and during the initial uphill climb (sector 2). I am feeling very confident today and don’t plan on getting lost. My thoughts on the initial climb is to veer right when in doubt. This part of the trail follows a mountain ledge, so you’ll know if you’ve gone too far to the right.
Not more than 5 minutes in after my break, and I’m under another shady tree. Perhaps the high altitude adds to the shortness of breath, but the grueling uphill climb on a loose gravel trail doesn’t help. I will reflect on my experiences along this trail. Patience is very important. It is a steep and strenuous hike. There is no hurry, take your time. Take as many rest stops as you need. If you are a talker, take some time to concentrate on breathing, and enjoy the peace and serenity of these sublime hills. Remove negative thoughts from your mind.
Once at the top of that sector 2 climb, there is a wide valley view in front and to the left is seen the unique rock formation landmark mentioned in other posts, as well as a clear view of Tikaboo Peak’s weather station. I’ve finally got the first park of this trail memorized, however I did get lost again on the final assent. I did not use my GPS app going up, and had no problems initially, but did end up getting off track near the end.
On my return trek I was able to stay on the trail the entire time. There are two camping spots marked by fire rings near the top. Some will camp up there to watch for lights and sounds at night. At Area 51 they will fly test planes and ships in the cover of night. Also morning is the best time for test base views in photo taking as the sun is behind. Times again are over an hour from Alamo, NV to get to the trail head, 1.5 to 2 hours hike to the top and about an hour to return.
